The best wrestlers in the state of Texas will ascend on the Berry Center this weekend.

They will show off their best moves in hopes of winning a state title.

Our own Brooke Trevino and Donovan Smith are hoping to leave their mark.

Trevino shocked her final opponent as well as herself by winning the Regional title in the 120 weight class. At district Trevino finished second losing to the same opponent from Cypress Creek that she beat for the regional title making the victory even sweeter.

“It feels unreal to win. I never thought about it especially in a bracket full of talented girls,” Trevino said. “I am nervous, but I am going to practice hard and hope to place at State.”

This is her second time to qualify for the State Meet.

“The beginning of the season was disappointing, but I kept fighting through it and coming back from a three-week injury. It was hard but I am proud of myself,” Trevino said.

Meanwhile Smith is only the third male in Cy Springs history to qualify for the State meet.

He took home the fourth place medal at Regionals after placing second at District.

“It feels great to be going to State especially because not many people have gone from our school. I think we are on a good path for the upcoming years to be successful,” Smith said. “I hope we can gain recognition at school like the other sports because we also put in hard work.”

According to Smith his plan to prepare for State is to keep the same mindset as he does for any other tournament “eat right, stay focused and go wrestle hard.”

Junior Lumiere Kahongo also had a strong performance at Regionals winning a medal.
