Her pencil strikes across the page, leaving traces of a talent that show just how far imagination can take you. Anne Lam, a senior at Cy Springs, has dedicated her life to the beauty of art, often creating art pieces that surpass the expectations of not just her peers, but her own as well.
Lam first fell in love with art when she was very young. Her early experiences in elementary school, especially receiving her first award, hooked her for life, sparking what would later become her life changing passion.
“That award is what first made me believe that I could continue in making a career out of art,” Lam said.
Although Lam discovered her passion for art early on, her decision to go into this field of work was not one heavily supported at home. This often formed into various arguments with her mother, who worried about the uncertainty this profession could bring to her life, and encouraged her to dedicate her time to something that would benefit her more in the future, to follow a more practical and easier path.
“My brother defended me against my mother when I said I wanted to continue art in the future,” Lam said, “He was always my biggest supporter and still believes in me even when I do not believe in myself.”
Despite these challenges, Lam has never allowed conflict to shatter her interest in art. She would always find ways to continue building upon her passion thanks to the unwavering support of her older brother, who she credits to be her greatest source of inspiration.
“Even when I was little, I was always inspired by the drawings he showed me,” Lam said. “To this day, he supports my future in art, even when my mother does not.”
During her high school years, Lam was given the opportunity to expand her skillset by practicing and experimenting with methods she had never tried before. These methods include drawings involving charcoal, animations, and realism. Her abilities were nothing short of impressive, and her style slowly developed into one she could reproduce with ease.
“If I could describe my style, I would describe it as diverse,” Lam said. “I love to do so many different art styles, they can range from like anime to realism.”
Lam has shown involvement in a multitude of heavily art-based organizations at Cy Springs, being a regular member of clubs that include Art Honor Society and Art Club.
“School helped me by exploring new types of art styles that I am usually afraid of. It helped me get out of my comfort zone,” Lam said.
As graduation gets closer, Lam hopes to leave a piece of advice for younger artists, encouraging them to persevere, remain dedicated to what they love and never give up.
“Do not be afraid to keep drawing,” Lam said. “Whether you are bad or good. If you truly love to draw, keep going.”
After high school, Lam plans to go to Lone Star College to continue her education in art. She hopes to acquire more experience in order to expand her social media accounts, and allow her art to reach more people around the world, or in other words, to form a community that supports her art and values the effort she has put into her learning experience throughout her entire life.
“I love art pieces that secretly have a deeper meaning the more you look at them,” Lam said. “I want people to feel moved when they see my drawings, to feel happy and inspired to dig deeper into the meaning of my projects.”
