In the bustling hallways of our school, some students stand out not just for their academic achievements, but for their passion and dedication to making a difference.
Senior Joaly Perez is one such student whose work in our school’s daycare and child development program has marked her as someone truly special.
“I’ve always loved being around children,” Perez said, who discovered her calling while working with our youngest learners. What began as an exploration has blossomed into a clear vision for her future of becoming a bilingual educator for kindergarten or first grade students.
Perez’s dedication to childhood education stems from a genuine desire to impact young lives.
“I want to become a teacher they’ll always remember,” she explains with determination in her voice.
Her time in the child development program hasn’t just been about fulfilling course requirements; it’s been about forming meaningful connections with children and understanding their unique needs. One particularly touching moment stands out in Perez’s experience. During the Thanksgiving celebration with students and parents, a young boy named Austin repeatedly called for her to sit next to him.
“At that moment, I realized I’ve created a strong bond with these students,” she said, highlighting the rewarding relationships that have reinforced her career choice.
Through her work with children, Perez has gained valuable insights that extend beyond the classroom.
“Children are little people with feelings they haven’t fully learned how to control, so it takes much patience,” she said. “Helping them through it and talking to them is the best way you can help them.”
As she prepares for life after graduation, Perez plans to pursue a degree in education with a focus on bilingual teaching. The skills she has developed patience, communication, and understanding will serve her well, whether in a professional setting or in her personal aspirations of becoming a parent herself.
For underclassmen considering similar work with children, Perez offers this advice:
“Be very patient and understanding. Talk to them face to face, tell them what’s wrong and what’s right. They’re children discovering emotions, so it’s hard for them, but the more practice, the better they’ll understand.”
Perez exemplifies how finding one’s passion can provide clarity and purpose. As she moves forward beyond our school halls, she carries not just knowledge but the special connections and moments that have shaped her path,a path dedicated to nurturing the next generation of learners.
