A Historic Season
Timothy Merchant, a seasoned 12th grader, made history as the first Cy Springs boys regional champion. His triumph was a testament to his unwavering resolve and relentless training.
“I knew I had to score quickly, so I had to find a way to earn points fast,” he said.
The memory of his grueling practice sessions surged through his mind, empowering him with the belief that he was destined for greatness. His journey had been marked by unwavering dedication, from the youth wrestling club to High-C. The moment of victory was not merely a burst of excitement but a culmination of his tireless efforts.
“I felt an expectation to be the best in the bracket because of all the hard work I had put in,” he said.
His coaches and teammates played an integral role in his success, holding him to the highest standards and constantly pushing him to reach new heights.
“Be open to criticism and always ask questions,” Merchant said, emphasizing the importance of constant improvement.
Merchant also won the district championship in the 215 weight class.
With plans to attend college and pursue his wrestling aspirations,he vowed to continue giving his all, driven by the unwavering support of those who believed in him.
Unmatched Aggression
Kennedy Alexander, another 12th grader, attributed her success to her laser-like focus on staying with her opponents.
She claimed the district and regional championship for the 185 weight class this year to advance to State.
“I had to be in the moment and believe that no one could beat me,” she said.
Her aggression and proficiency in throws earned her a formidable reputation on the mat.
The adrenaline rush she experienced during competitions fueled her determination to overcome any obstacle.
“My teammates and coaches were everything to me,” Alexander said.
Their unwavering support gave her the confidence she needed to succeed.
Her advice to aspiring wrestlers is simple yet powerful,”just be yourself, both on and off the mat.”
By embracing her innate abilities and unwavering belief, she had achieved remarkable success.
Overcoming Adversity
Evelynn Garcia, a determined 12th grader, faced adversity on her second day of districts, but her unwavering mindset propelled her to the finals.
“I had to work on my dump, which is a move I needed to master,” she said.
Her hard work and dedication paid off, and she experienced immense happiness and pride in her accomplishments. She finished fifth at Regionals to qualify for State.
“My coaches never gave up on me, and they always encouraged me to keep my head up,” she said.
Their unwavering belief in her has been instrumental in her success.
Garcia has committed to continue her wrestling career at Illinois Wesleyan University next year.
Her advice to aspiring wrestlers was clear: “Work hard, no matter what anyone says. Be determined and never give up on your dreams.”
Resilience in the Face of Challenges
Daphne Miller, a 12th grader who faced challenges in her fourth match at regionals, displayed remarkable resilience.
“I struggled during the first period, but I turned the tide in the second and got my pin,” she said.
She finished fourth to qualify for State.
Her ability to prepare mentally the day before and focus on herself in the moment were the keys to her success this year.
“I work on neutral, bottom, and top positions every day in practice,” Miller said.
Her dedication to improving every aspect of her wrestling had enabled her to overcome adversity. Despite feeling nervous, she maintained her confidence and
pushed herself to the limit.
“My coaches and teammates truly believed in me and motivated me to win,” Miller said.
Their support had been invaluable in her journey.
Her advice to aspiring wrestlers is “Improve every day, work hard, stay healthy, and never give up on your dreams.”
A Rising Star
Leila Hurd, a 10th grader, has showcased her potential and determination throughout her wrestling career.
“I focused on what I could and couldn’t do and worked on everything they were working on with me,” she said.
She finished fourth at Regionals to qualify for State.
Her dedication to improving her underhooks and snapdowns had paid off. Despite feeling nervous, Leila found inner strength by listening to music and meditating before competitions.
“I felt confident and pushed through all my matches,” she said.
Her coaches and teammates had instilled in her the belief that she could achieve anything she set her mind to.
“Take one match at a time and try your hardest,” Hurd said.
Her focus on the present moment has been essential to her success. With plans to continue wrestling in college, she is determined to reach even greater heights.
